UN Expresses Concern Over Worsening Hunger in Afghanistan

The head of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan has expressed concern about the reduction in international aid and the possibility of a U.S. suspension of aid, stating that such decisions will affect the lives of millions of Afghans and exacerbate hunger this winter.
Xiao-Wei Li told Reuters that the organization was “only able to help half” of the Afghans in need, with many living on “bread and tea.” TOLOnews quoted the Taliban government’s Ministry of Economy as saying that 50 aid agencies in Afghanistan had stopped operating due to the suspension of U.S. foreign aid.
Li expressed concern yesterday about the reduction in international aid and the suspension of U.S. aid, stating that these decisions would affect the lives of millions of Afghans and exacerbate hunger this winter. According to UN figures, only a little more than half of the budget needed for 2024 has been met, and aid workers fear that this amount will also be reduced this year.
