Severe food insecurity affects 80,000 people in flood-affected areas and warnings about further floods in Afghanistan.
The United Nations has warned that Afghanistan will experience more devastating floods in the coming months. The World Food Programme reports that approximately 80,000 people in flood-affected areas in northeastern and northwestern Afghanistan have been affected by recent floods and are at greater risk of food insecurity than before. According to the head of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan, families affected by the floods need urgent assistance to survive and investment to protect their homes, land, and sources of income.
Government officials in Taliban-controlled Ghōr province have also stated that they have done what they can to help flood victims in the province, but the situation remains very difficult, especially in the Marghāb district.
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, said in a press briefing, citing the World Food Programme, that flood-affected districts were already in critical conditions even before these recent events.
