Decreasing the consumption of fruit and increasing unsafe food in Iranian households
Fruit is one of the primary food sources alongside red meat. However, inflation in Iran has had significant effects. According to news reports, there has been a record increase in fruit prices during the months of Khordad and Tir 1403 (May-June 2024). Particularly vulnerable labour families have reduced their fruit consumption due to these rising costs.
The Ilna Press report highlights the inflation in food prices during the current months of Khordad and Tir 1403(May-June 2024), coupled with an increase in poverty rates. This situation disproportionately affects low-income families, especially labourers. For example, the price of 4 kilograms of fruit now exceeds the income a labourer earns in 2 to 5 days.
The consequences are far-reaching. Not only are some Iranian citizens facing malnutrition due to decreased fruit consumption but there are also potential long-term physical and psychological effects.
